What happens when car tires come off cars?

I am writing a suspense novel and I want the bad guy to loosen the lugs on the tire of the heroine. She drives a Smart Car. Would she have better control in that or another car as I want her to be hurt, not seriously but enough to spend a day or two in the hospital. I know nothing about the physics of cars. Any help would be appreciated.
